Supporting local charities and community organisations is part of everyday life at Avon Engineered Rubber in Maerdy, South Wales. With over 100 employees, many of the team have deep roots in the area, and the company is glad to back the causes they care about.

These are some of the good causes the team has supported.

Grassroots sport

Maerdy Bowls Club and Ferndale FC Under 11s have both received contributions towards new kit and now wear Avon Group branded shirts. With coaches, players and parents from both clubs among the AER workforce, Managing Director Vince Michella was happy to step in. “From children’s football to bowls, the teamwork in local sport reinforces our Avon Way values of care, courtesy, commitment, responsibility and pride,” he said.

Another AER connection making her mark is Mali Evans, aged nine, who won gold and bronze medals at the Wako World Kickboxing Championships, wearing an Avon Group tracksuit. Mali comes from a family with three generations of AER employees.

Going the distance

A team from AER took part in Kooper’s Race Across the Res, raising money to support local boy Kooper’s treatment for retinoblastoma. The team tackled Rhigos mountain in fancy dress, contributing to a total fundraising figure of £7,800.

Trainee financial controller Stephen Durbin completed the London Marathon in 3 hours 48 minutes, raising funds for Hope Dog Rescue in Pontyclun. Colleagues sponsored Stephen and ran a sweepstake on his finishing time.

1,000 musicians, one big night

Morgan, son of AER’s QHSE specialist Huw Goodhand Johns, performed the music of Linkin Park alongside 1,000 fellow musicians at the Utilita Arena Birmingham – part of the 1000 Lights event, which raised £120,000 for Uprawr Mental Health Foundation.
